STORY AT A GLANCE

  • Wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) is a fast-progressing, sight-threatening condition that can cause sudden and permanent central vision loss.

  • Early detection is critical—but many patients miss the subtle signs until damage is advanced.

  • Wet AMD begins when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, leading to bleeding, fluid leakage, and scarring.

  • The earlier it’s diagnosed, the better the chance of preserving functional vision with both conventional treatment and holistic care.

  • Knowing the early symptoms—and taking fast action—can save your sight.

👁️ What Is Wet AMD?

Wet AMD is the advanced form of age-related macular degeneration, a condition that affects the macula—the part of your retina responsible for central, detailed vision.

In wet AMD, new abnormal blood vessels (neovascularization) form under the macula. These vessels are weak and leaky. When they rupture or ooze fluid, it leads to retinal swelling, scarring, and rapid loss of central vision.

Although wet AMD represents only 10–15% of all AMD cases, it causes over 80% of severe vision loss related to macular degeneration.

⚠️ Early Signs You Should Never Ignore

The symptoms of wet AMD can appear suddenly and progress rapidly. Here’s what to watch for:

1. Straight lines start to look wavy or bent

If door frames, blinds, or tiled floors appear distorted, it may signal swelling beneath your macula.

2. A central blurry spot that doesn’t go away

This may begin as a shadow, smudge, or gray area in the center of your visual field.

3. Difficulty reading or seeing faces

You may find yourself struggling to focus on words or recognize people—even with glasses.

4. Colors appear faded or washed out

The macula plays a role in color perception. Changes in vibrancy may be an early warning.

5. Sudden worsening of vision in one eye

Since wet AMD often starts in just one eye, the unaffected eye can mask the problem—until you test them separately.

🔬 What Causes Wet AMD?

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but key drivers include:

  • Oxidative stress and inflammation in the retina

  • Damage to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)

  • Chronic poor circulation to retinal tissue

  • Dysregulation of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which triggers abnormal vessel growth

Risk factors include age (over 60), smoking, genetics (CFH or ARMS2 variants), poor diet, high blood pressure, and prolonged blue light exposure.

🧠 What Happens If You Ignore the Signs?

Wet AMD doesn’t give second chances. If left untreated, it can lead to:

  • Central vision loss within weeks or months

  • Permanent retinal scarring

  • Severe visual disability (you may still have peripheral vision, but lose the ability to read, drive, or recognize faces)

The damage is irreversible—but early intervention can preserve sight.

💉 Conventional Treatment: Anti-VEGF Injections

The standard medical approach involves intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF medications such as:

  • Eylea (aflibercept)

  • Lucentis (ranibizumab)

  • Avastin (bevacizumab)

These treatments block VEGF and stop abnormal vessel growth, reducing leakage and swelling. Many patients maintain or even improve vision with timely and consistent therapy.

But injections don’t treat the underlying inflammation, oxidative stress, or metabolic drivers of the disease. That’s where holistic care comes in.

🌿 Holistic Support for Wet AMD

As a holistic ophthalmologist, I believe in treating the root causes, not just symptoms. My integrative approach includes:
