A reflection from my recent mission trip to Togo
On my most recent trip to Togo, I had the deep joy of witnessing something truly powerful: sight restored, hope renewed, and lives forever changed.
I’m happy to report that together with our incredible mission team, we performed 250 cataract surgeries and 6 strabismus surgeries—each one a life transformed.
These aren’t just numbers. Behind every procedure is a story—a face, a family, a future. With each surgery, we help lift a veil of darkness and give someone the chance to see their loved ones, return to work, move through life with confidence and independence.
A Team Fueled by Purpose
One of the greatest honors of this trip was working alongside the remarkable team at Sight.org. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching many of these local doctors—sharing new ideas, refining surgical techniques, and introducing more efficient methods to allow us to serve as many patients as possible with the highest standards of care.
And let me tell you, the results of this collaborative effort were extraordinary.
The entire system—from patient intake to pre-op, surgery, post-op care, and sterilization—ran like a well-oiled machine. Every team member worked with purpose, care, and precision. It was a joy to witness how far we’ve come together, building something not just sustainable but exceptional.
Because of their dedication, we were able to perform a high volume of surgeries without ever compromising on the quality of outcomes. Every patient received thoughtful, skillful care—often delivered by doctors who were once students standing beside me, eager to learn.
When Sight Is Restored, So Is Dignity
What moves me most is knowing what each restored vision truly means.
When a farmer can once again see the land, he can return to feeding his family.
When a mother regains her sight, she can care for her children with greater ease.
When elders can see again, they reconnect with their loved ones, their communities, and the world around them.
The impact reaches far beyond the individual—it touches families, strengthens communities, and opens doors that had once been closed.
This is why I go.
This is why I teach.
This is why I serve.
Each trip reminds me that healing doesn’t always start with medicine—it begins with compassion, teamwork, and the belief that every life matters.
And I am deeply honored to be part of a mission that delivers not only restored vision, but renewed hope.
